Defining Several Ontologies to Enhance the Expressive Power of Queries
نویسندگان
چکیده
The use of ontologies is a key step forward for describing the semantics of information on the Web. It is becoming more and more important to make the information machinereadable, since the volume of data is continuously growing. In the educational area, metadata are considered to be helpful in such a process. We propose to enrich the description of educational resources by introducing several levels of description of concepts, and to make them machinereadable by using a formal language of ontology, OWL. Using both this ontology and the expressive power of an OWL query language to query pedagogical resources will improve the retrieval and interchange of educational resources.

Efficient instance retrieval over semi-expressive ontologies
In the last years, the vision of the Semantic Web fostered the interest in reasoning over growing sets of assertional statements in ontologies. Traditional tableau-based reasoning systems have problems to answer queries over large ontological data sets because these reasoning systems are based on efficient use of main memory data structures. Increasing expressivity and worst-case complexity fur...
متن کاملQuery Answering in Expressive Variants of DL-Lite
The use of ontologies in various application domains, such as Data Integration, the Semantic Web, or ontology-based data management, where ontologies provide the access to large amounts of data, is posing challenging requirements w.r.t. the trade-off between the expressive power of a Description Logic and the efficiency of reasoning. The logics of the DL-Lite family were specifically designed t...
متن کاملReasoning Support for Expressive Ontology Languages Using a Theorem Prover
It is claimed in [45] that first-order theorem provers are not efficient for reasoning with ontologies based on description logics compared to specialised description logic reasoners. However, the development of more expressive ontology languages requires the use of theorem provers able to reason with full first-order logic and even its extensions. So far, theorem provers have extensively been ...
متن کاملView-Based Query Answering over Description Logic Ontologies
View-based query answering is the problem of answering a query based only on the answers precomputed for a set of views. While this problem has been widely investigated in databases, it is largely unexplored in the context of Description Logic ontologies. Differently from traditional databases, Description Logics may express several forms of incomplete information, and this poses challenging pr...
متن کاملData Complexity of Query Answering in Expressive Description Logics with Nominals
The formal foundations of the standard web ontology languages, OWL-Lite and OWLDL, are provided by expressive Description Logics (DLs), such as SHIF and SHOIQ. In the Semantic Web and other domains, ontologies are increasingly seen also as a mechanism to access and query data repositories. This novel context poses an original combination of challenges that has not been addressed before: (i) suf...
